The Parish of Hednesford welcomes all who wish to be baptised or who wish their children to be baptised at any of our churches.
Baptism is the same thing as Christening. Many folk locally use the word ‘Christening’ for what the church calls ‘Baptism’. They are the same thing.
What to do when you want to be baptised or if you want your child/children baptised
Anyone wishing to enquire about or book a baptism in the Parish should go to St Peter’s Church between 6.30 pm & 7.30 pm any Thursday. Maps showing the locations of the churches are available on the website.
When and where do the baptism services happen?
Baptisms usually take place at St Peter’s and St Saviour’s churches -
St Peter’s Church at 10am on the second Sunday of the month
and 12 noon on the third Sunday of the month
St Saviour’s Church at 10.30am on the fifth Sunday of the month
Will there be other people getting baptised as well?
Usually we limit the number of baptism families to two at any service.
Preparation?
All Parents, Godparents and any adults being baptised are asked to attend a baptism preparation evening. The purpose of the preparation is to make all those coming to the baptism service feel as confident as we can make them feel about the service. It is a good opportunity to reflect on the meaning and purpose of baptism and to encourage folk to think carefully about what they are doing and why. The preparation is thought provoking and helpful. The preparation evening takes place on a Monday evening and lasts from 7.30 – 8.15pm
Godparents?
Very young children who are not old enough to speak for themselves will need to have Godparents who will speak on their behalf at the baptism service. It is helpful to know who you would like to be Godparents before you meet with the minister to ‘book in’. Generally you will need at least three Godparents. If you have any questions about Godparents please ask the minister.
Adults who are to be baptised do not need to have Godparents.
Do Parents & Godparents need to be baptised?
All Godparents will need to have been baptised or will need to be able to demonstrate a commitment to the Christian Faith. If someone wishes to be a Godparent but has not been baptised we ask that they also get baptised at the baptism service of the child – this is always a very good and meaningful thing.
Similarly we encourage all parents of children being baptised to get baptised themselves if they have not already been baptised. – this is always very good too.
What if I live outside the parish?
If you wish for a baptism to take place in the Parish of Hednesford but live in another parish you will need to ask for permission from the parish in which you live. When you come to book in the baptism you will be given a form to fill in to help you get permission. If you are not sure whether you live in the parish or not please ask when you come to book in.
