We at St. Peter's set ourselves a challenge; to raise £2,000 for the year 2000, to send to help the street children in Romania.

Much to our surprise and delight, we exceeded that target. On 7th May, 2000, we were able to present to Sue Genge,(pictured) representing the PCF Romanian Fund, a cheque for £4,275.

However, the fund-raising has not stopped, and when Sue came to give us an update on the continuing work in Romania on 3rd June, 2001, she was presented with a further cheque for another £1,500.

Ways to help

  • Collect small change in a jar and hand it in when full.
  • Cakes and produce are on sale at St. Peter's after 10am Sunday service.
  • Original watercolours and bookmarks by Trevor Saunders are on sale in the narthex at St. Peter's.
  • Postcards of the church are also on sale in the narthex.

  • Many of these "street children", some as young as four years old, live underground in sewers; it is the only place they can find warmth. Many of them are orphans, others have been abandoned.

Our objectives as a small church based charity are:-
TO REACH STREET CHILDREN IN ROMANIA WITH MATERIAL, MEDICAL & SPIRITUAL HELP.

We currently help street children in :-
    Galati, East Romania.
We have been befriending street children in Galati for many years. In 1996 we bought 3 acres of land on which we built a home for some of these children. It was finished in December 1998 in time to get children off the streets before the worst of the Romanian winter weather set in - temperatures can be as low as minus 20c and children go underground to survive! We are now working with David Chronic who has a Rescue Centre for street children.

    'CITY OF HOPE' - Bucharest.
"City of Hope" was started in 1994, by Cristian Soimaru and Angie Thomson, to help the youngest and most vulnerable children who have been left to fend for themselves in Romania's capital. It consists of three facilities : Villa of Hope for boys, House of Hope for girls and Hope Rescue Centre where up to 150 street children are fed each day. We hope to contribute towards a purpose-built campus for 200 children in the near future.

    'OAZA' -Arad, West Romania.
"Oaza" began in 1995 by an English lawyer, Lee Saville. The work now supports a number of children's homes and a rescue centre. Several cottage industries have been started in Arad to help support the work and to give employment to needy teenage street children.
